World Town Planning Day 2026 is being observed today, November 8, across the world to highlight the importance of planned, sustainable and inclusive cities. The day recognises how effective urban planning can improve living conditions, protect the environment and create better communities for future generations.

The international observance was initiated in 1949 by Argentine professor Carlos María della Paolera in Buenos Aires. This year marks the 77th anniversary of the occasion, which brings together urban planners, policymakers, researchers and communities to promote better approaches to city development.

The 2026 global theme is "Great Communities Are Built on Planning." It emphasises the importance of involving local communities in urban development decisions. Collaboration between residents, professionals and authorities can help create cities that are more accessible, environmentally friendly and resilient.

Urban planning plays an important role in addressing challenges such as traffic congestion, housing shortages, pollution, inadequate drainage and the loss of green spaces. Proper planning can also improve public transportation, healthcare facilities, educational institutions and other essential urban services.

In Bangladesh, rapid urbanisation has increased the importance of sustainable city planning. The Bangladesh Institute of Planners (BIP) is marking the occasion in 2026 with the theme "Great Communities are Built on Planning: Together We Deliver, Together We Thrive, Together We Sustain." The institute has also arranged competitions and activities to encourage participation among planning professionals and students.

World Town Planning Day serves as a reminder that building better cities requires more than roads and buildings. It demands coordinated development, environmental protection, public participation and long-term planning. The ultimate goal is to create safe, inclusive and sustainable communities where people can live, work and thrive.
