US President Donald Trump has held meetings with his national security team to discuss the possibility of resuming military operations against Iran, according to senior US officials cited by Fox News. The meetings reportedly took place at the White House on Wednesday and Thursday, as Washington considers its next steps amid rising tensions with Tehran.
According to the officials, November 9 could be a potentially favourable date for a military operation. The Middle East is expected to experience a new moon that night, meaning there will be little or almost no natural moonlight. Such dark conditions could provide favourable circumstances for certain military operations, particularly those requiring reduced visibility.
However, the reports do not confirm that the United States has made a final decision to launch an attack on Iran on that date. The timing of any possible military action remains uncertain, and no official announcement has been made by the White House.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump said Washington would make a decision on whether to resume the war against Iran. His remarks have further increased speculation about the possibility of another round of military confrontation between the two countries.
Trump also indicated that the administration was considering additional strikes to completely destroy Iran's nuclear programme and prevent the country from restarting it in the future. He suggested that military action could extend beyond the country's remaining nuclear-related facilities if Washington considered it necessary.
"If possible, I would not want to destroy the rest of the country. But I may have to do that. You will find out soon," Trump said.
Meanwhile, according to a report citing a US official, the United States Central Command is finalising preparations for the possible resumption of a major military campaign against Iran. The preparations reportedly reflect Washington's consideration of a renewed military operation.
However, the official said the Central Command had not yet received any fresh instructions from Washington to begin a new operation. This suggests that military preparations may be underway, but a final decision to launch an attack has not been confirmed.
The developments come amid growing regional concerns over the possibility of another escalation in the Middle East. Any renewed US military action against Iran could have wider consequences for neighbouring countries and regional security.
In a separate development, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi urged Trump during a phone conversation on Thursday not to allow Iraqi territory to be used for attacks against neighbouring countries.
According to a statement published by the Iraqi Prime Minister's Office on X, al-Zaidi reiterated Baghdad's position on respecting the sovereignty of all states. He also stressed that Iraqi territory must not be used as a base for launching aggression against neighbouring countries.
Iraq's position highlights growing concerns among regional governments about the potential consequences of renewed military conflict. As Washington weighs its options, developments surrounding Iran and the possibility of further US strikes are likely to remain a major focus of international attention.
