Lionel Messi has created another historic milestone in Major League Soccer (MLS), becoming the first player in league history to win the Golden Boot in consecutive seasons. The Inter Miami superstar finished the 2026 regular season with 26 goals, securing the top scorer award for the second year in a row. His outstanding performances helped Miami qualify for the playoffs and strengthened his reputation as one of the league's most influential players.

Inter Miami concluded their regular-season campaign with a dramatic 3-3 draw against Charlotte FC at Nu Stadium on Saturday. Although Messi failed to find the back of the net, he played a key role in two of Miami's goals. Both strikes came from corners delivered by the Argentine captain, highlighting his importance beyond scoring.

Miami started the match aggressively and took control early. In the 14th minute, Ian Fray opened the scoring after a corner from Messi created an opportunity inside the box. The home side doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute when Luis Suarez headed home another Messi corner.

Rodrigo De Paul added a third goal before half-time, giving the defending champions a comfortable 3-0 lead. However, Charlotte FC produced an impressive comeback after the break. Liel Abada reduced the deficit shortly after half-time before scoring again in the 55th minute to bring his team back into the contest.

The visitors completed their comeback in the final minute of regular time when Rodolfo Aloko found the net to make it 3-3. Miami had several opportunities to regain the lead during stoppage time, but Messi's shot struck the post. Aloko also came close to scoring a late winner, but his powerful effort missed the target. The match eventually ended in a draw.

Despite failing to score in the final game, Messi comfortably secured the Golden Boot with 26 goals. Petar Musa of FC Dallas finished second with 22 goals. Dallas defeated Colorado 3-1 in their final regular-season fixture, but Musa could not add to his tally. As a result, Messi finished four goals ahead of his closest competitor.

The Argentine legend had previously won the Golden Boot last season after scoring 29 goals. He also became the second player in MLS history to score at least 25 goals in consecutive regular seasons. This time, however, he achieved an even greater milestone by becoming the first player to win the league's top scorer award in back-to-back seasons.

Inter Miami finished second in the Eastern Conference with 60 points. Nashville SC claimed the top position with 77 points after defeating FC Cincinnati 2-0. The result also helped Nashville establish a new MLS regular-season points record, surpassing Miami's previous mark of 74 points set in 2024.

Messi recently extended his contract with Inter Miami until 2028. After leading the club to its first MLS Cup title last season, the Argentine superstar will now aim to guide the team to another championship. The MLS Cup playoffs are scheduled to begin on November 19, with Inter Miami set to face Columbus in their opening match.

The achievement further underlines Messi's remarkable consistency in MLS. Winning the Golden Boot once was already a major accomplishment, but defending the award in consecutive seasons places him in a category of his own in the league's history. With the playoffs approaching, Miami will once again rely on his creativity, experience and goal-scoring ability to defend their championship.
