Three oil tankers have reportedly been hit by explosions and caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The Iranian military force claimed that the incidents occurred early today, alleging that the vessels were travelling through the strategic waterway without authorization.
In a statement published on Telegram, the IRGC Navy said three oil tankers had been affected by explosions and severe fires since the early hours of the day. It also claimed that thick smoke had covered the sky above the strategically important commercial shipping route.
According to the IRGC, the vessels had switched off their navigation and identification systems while passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The Iranian force described their movements as unauthorized and warned that ships failing to follow Iran's regulations could face serious consequences.
The IRGC also accused the United States military of playing a role in the incidents. In its statement, the force alleged that the fires aboard the vessels were also caused by attacks carried out by what it described as the "aggressive occupying US military".
However, the statement did not provide specific details about the identities of the three oil tankers, their ownership, their flags or the exact locations where the explosions occurred. It also did not clarify whether there were any casualties among the crew members or how extensive the damage to the vessels was.
The IRGC Navy further emphasized that Iran had repeatedly communicated its regulations for vessels operating in the Strait of Hormuz. It warned that ships ignoring these rules should not expect a different outcome.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes. Located between Iran and Oman, it connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. A substantial portion of the world's oil shipments passes through this narrow waterway, making it vital to international energy supplies and global trade.
Any disruption to shipping activities in the area can raise concerns about the security of international maritime transportation and the stability of global energy markets.
The latest claim comes amid heightened tensions involving Iran and the United States. The reported explosions and fires could further increase concerns over maritime security in the region.
However, the information about the three burning oil tankers has so far been presented through the IRGC's statement. Independent confirmation of the incidents and the circumstances surrounding the reported fires was not included in the statement.
The situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains a matter of international concern, given the waterway's importance to global oil transportation and commercial shipping.
