Harry Kane is no longer known solely for his goalscoring ability at Bayern Munich. The England striker has developed into a more versatile forward, frequently dropping into midfield to help build attacks, create chances and remain actively involved in his team's play. Kane has now credited former Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho for playing an important role in shaping this aspect of his game.

Speaking at a press conference ahead of Bayern Munich's Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid, Kane discussed how his playing style has evolved over the years. He explained that Mourinho's arrival at Tottenham in 2019 gave him greater freedom to explore different areas of the pitch and make better use of his passing abilities.

Kane revealed that he had played in several positions during his youth career before becoming primarily a number nine at Tottenham. Under Mourinho, however, he was encouraged to move beyond the traditional responsibilities of a centre-forward and contribute more to the team's overall attacking play.

"I think when I was in the youth teams, I played in all sorts of positions. But at Tottenham, I really focused on playing as a number nine," Kane explained.

The England captain also highlighted how Mourinho recognised qualities in his game that were not always given enough attention. Although Kane was widely regarded as a natural goalscorer and traditional striker, his ability to deliver passes and create opportunities for teammates was another important part of his skill set.

"When Jose came in, he gave me a lot of freedom. One of my biggest strengths was my passing, but people didn't really notice that because they mainly saw me as a goalscorer and a pure striker," Kane said.

Mourinho took charge of Tottenham in November 2019, replacing Mauricio Pochettino. During his time at the London club, he worked closely with Kane and helped develop a more flexible attacking partnership between the striker and his teammates.

Under Mourinho, Kane often dropped deeper to receive the ball and create opportunities for Son Heung-min. Their partnership became one of the most effective attacking combinations in the Premier League, with both players benefiting from each other's movement and understanding.

Kane's development has continued since joining Bayern Munich in 2023. At the German club, he has become an important part of an attacking system that allows him to contribute in several ways. Alongside scoring goals, he regularly participates in build-up play, links midfield with attack and creates opportunities for other forwards.

The 32-year-old believes Bayern's playing style suits his abilities particularly well. He also feels that he is becoming increasingly aware of the different roles he can perform on the pitch.

"The way we play at Bayern suits me and many others really well. We can show how confidently we can take on our opponents. I'm understanding more and more each day the different roles I can play on the pitch," Kane added.

His comments highlight how his experience under Mourinho helped him recognise the value of his all-round attacking abilities. While goalscoring remains a major part of his game, Kane has increasingly established himself as a forward capable of creating chances, controlling attacking moves and influencing matches beyond the penalty area.
