Garment workers' new pay scale is set to take effect in December, bringing a significant update for thousands of workers in Bangladesh's readymade garment industry. According to the minimum wage board chairman, workers are expected to receive their first salaries under the revised structure in January.

Syed Azad Subhani, chairman of the minimum wage board for garment workers, shared the update following the board's first meeting at its office in Dhaka. He confirmed that the revised wage structure would come into effect in December.

The announcement comes amid growing unrest in major garment industrial areas, where several hundred factories have reportedly remained closed over the past four days. The disruptions have affected production and raised concerns about possible delays in export shipments.

Meanwhile, garment workers have been demanding a minimum monthly salary of Tk 30,000. They say persistent inflation over the past four years has reduced their purchasing power and made it increasingly difficult to manage everyday expenses.

In response to the ongoing situation, the government formed a six-member minimum wage board on November 1. The board has been assigned the responsibility of recommending a revised wage structure for garment workers.

With the new pay scale expected to take effect in December, workers are now awaiting further details about the revised salary structure and how it will affect their monthly earnings. The first payment under the new system is expected in January.
