Two Bangladeshi-origin politicians, Sheikh Rahman and MD Masudur Rahman, have won in the United States midterm elections. Sheikh Rahman was elected unopposed to Georgia's State Senate District 5, while MD Masudur Rahman secured re-election in Connecticut's State Senate District 4 by defeating his Republican opponent. Meanwhile, the election results for New Hampshire lawmaker Abul Khan have yet to be independently verified.
Sheikh Rahman was elected unopposed in Georgia's State Senate District 5 as no candidate contested against him. According to preliminary figures, he received 35,101 votes. His victory marks another milestone in his political career and reinforces his position in Georgia's political landscape.
Earlier, on May 19, Sheikh Rahman secured the Democratic Party nomination by defeating Robin McCoy in the party's primary election. With no opponent in the general election, his victory was effectively secured. The result further highlights his continued political presence and influence in the state.
Sheikh Rahman traces his roots to Kishoreganj, Bangladesh. He is Georgia's first Muslim and Asian-origin state senator. Since being elected for the first time in 2018, he has represented the state's 5th Senate District. His achievement is considered significant for the growing participation of Bangladeshi-origin politicians in American politics.
Sheikh Rahman had also secured a convincing victory in the 2024 election. At the time, he defeated Republican candidate Lisa Babbage by nearly twice the number of votes, winning re-election for a fourth term. His latest victory marks another successful chapter in his political journey in Georgia.
Meanwhile, MD Masudur Rahman has won re-election in Connecticut's State Senate District 4 as the Democratic Party candidate. He defeated Republican candidate Jen Jennings to retain his seat. Local media outlet City Insider reported his victory based on preliminary election results. However, the exact number of votes he received has not yet been confirmed.
MD Masudur Rahman has family roots in Hajiganj, Chandpur, Bangladesh. He was first elected to the Connecticut State Senate in 2022. He subsequently secured another victory in the 2024 election, receiving 33,099 votes. His latest win marks another successful election campaign and allows him to continue representing his constituency.
It is worth mentioning that five Bangladeshi-origin politicians were elected to public office in different parts of the United States in the 2024 elections. They were Sheikh Rahman, Nabila Islam Parkes, Nurun Nabi, MD Masudur Rahman and Abul Khan. Their electoral success was considered a significant achievement for the Bangladeshi community living in the United States.
However, no reliable information has been found regarding the candidacies of Nurun Nabi and Nabila Islam Parkes in the 2026 elections. Therefore, they have not been included in this year's election results. Meanwhile, the outcome of Abul Khan's race has also not yet been independently verified. Based on the information currently available, two Bangladeshi-origin politicians have secured confirmed victories in the latest US midterm elections.
